Mavericks Disk Utility - Live System Repair Is Not Supported Error

A bug in the Mavericks disk handling is throwing up disk errors which the Apple Utility claims it can't fix. It got me here's how I backed up my data off the disk. If you have Mavericks I'd watch this as it appears its only a matter of time before the message pops up, and you'd be wise to be prepared.
